A Book I Couldn’t Put Down: “Counting the Cost” by Jill Duggar Dillard

An honest review of Jill Duggar Dillard’s memoir, exploring faith, family, and personal growth.

Okay, y’all. I just finished Counting the Cost by Jill Duggar Dillard, and I have so many thoughts—I had to pop on here and talk about it.

If you’ve ever watched the Duggar family on TV or followed their story at all, this book is going to pull you right in. But let me tell you, this isn’t just a “spill the tea” kind of book. It’s so much deeper than that.

It felt like sitting down with a friend

Reading Jill’s story felt like hearing from a friend who’s finally telling you what she’s been holding in for years. She’s honest—like, really honest—but she’s also respectful. You can tell she’s not out to hurt anyone. She’s just sharing her side of things and what she’s walked through with her family, her marriage, and her faith.

And honestly? I cried more than once reading it.

What hit me the most

There’s this theme throughout the book that just stuck with me—how following Jesus sometimes means disappointing people. Even people you love. Jill talks about setting boundaries, learning hard lessons, and leaning on God when everything else felt shaky.

It made me think about my own journey—especially as a mom. There are so many moments where you have to choose what’s best for your family, even if it’s hard. Jill’s story reminded me that it’s okay to do that. And not just okay—it’s good and holy to protect your peace.

I kept nodding along

There were so many times I caught myself whispering, “Yes, girl!” while I was reading. She talks about therapy, faith, family tension, parenting, and just the real, messy middle of trying to break cycles and grow.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in people-pleasing or struggled with religious pressure, this book will speak to you.

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely. If you’ve ever been curious about what really went on behind the scenes with the Duggars—or even if you haven’t and you just love a good memoir—Counting the Cost is worth the read. It’s not bitter. It’s not dramatic. It’s just real.

I finished the last page feeling proud of her. And honestly? A little inspired to keep walking in truth, even when it’s hard.
