How to Start a Prayer Journal That Grows Your Faith

I recently decided to start a prayer journal. This is a journal that I have been writing down all my prayers in. I keep it separate from my Bible Study journal and have it as its own separate notebook. I love to start everyday with a morning prayer and try to also end every night with an evening prayer. I will even write down my little prayers throughout the day. Since I have just started this, I don’t have that many prayers written down yet, but I am very excited to see myself grow throughout my prayers as well as seeing my prayers get answered, both big and small.

I absolutely love the thought of writing down my prayers. I pray all throughout my day. I pray for others, I pray to praise and thank Him, and I pray for answers and guidance. I honestly love to pray and have conversations with God. I feel like when I write it down I get even more into my prayer session. Of course its not required to write down our prayers, but having that visual and commitment of my prayers has made me feel even closer in my relationship with God.

It’s also been such a sweet way to reflect. I’ve already gone back and reread some of the prayers I wrote just a week or two ago, and it amazes me how much comfort I find in those words—especially when I can see how God is already working in the situations I prayed about. Even when things aren’t answered right away, writing it all down reminds me that He’s listening and that I’m not alone.

Another thing I love is being able to pray more intentionally. Sometimes, when I pray silently in my head, my thoughts get scattered or I lose track of what I wanted to say. But with my prayer journal, I can slow down and really talk to God. I take my time, pour out my heart, and just sit in His presence. It’s helped me grow in gratitude, patience, and trust.

If you’ve ever thought about starting a prayer journal, I highly recommend it. You don’t need anything fancy—just a notebook and a willing heart. You can start with simple prayers, write out your worries, thank God for blessings, or even write letters to Him. There’s no “right” way to do it. Just make it your own and let it be a space where your faith can grow.

This little journal has become one of my favorite parts of the day. It’s peaceful. It’s honest. And most importantly, it’s between me and God.

5 Simple Ways to Start Your Own Prayer Journal:

  1. Choose a Dedicated Notebook
It doesn’t have to be fancy—just something that feels special to you and is used only for your prayers.
  2. Set a Daily Prayer Time
Whether it’s in the morning, at night, or both—create a routine that helps you stay consistent and intentional.
  3. Start with Gratitude
Begin each entry by thanking God for something. It sets the tone for your conversation and opens your heart.
  4. Be Honest and Unfiltered
Don’t overthink it. Write your prayers like you’re talking to a friend—because that’s exactly what prayer is.
  5. Date Your Entries
This will bless you later when you look back and see how far you’ve come and how your prayers have been answered.
